Sweet as: Construction (part 1)

Yep, that’s some empty land right there.

These pictures date back to late April, so it looks pretty different today. But this is what an empty plot looks like in Jack’s Point, a “suburb” of Queenstown. I wasn’t wholly convinced that I wanted to buy land out here, but it’s hard to be disappointed by the neverending views!  I mean, just look at the place:

It’s pretty spectacular, right?

The land we purchased came with a proprosed design as well. We didn’t love all of the details, so we made some changes to it – nothing major, really, but we moved a few walls and add a back patio to make it more “ours”. In the end, it will be an ideal living space for two, with a self-contained guest suite (with its own bathroom) and a separate office/guest space. We’re expecting visitors!

The back garden is going to be something really special. Because we’re built into a sloping hill, we have lots of privacy back there. And the ground will be terraced above the retaining wall, so that we can plant all kinds of veggies and other edibles. We’ll have a stone-paver walkway from the back garden to the driveway so that we don’t traipse through the house with dirt on our shoes, and there will be a handyman workbench built into the garage for tools and other wo/manly things. And – of course! – space for an always-chilled wine cellar. Can’t build a house without one.

Building is not for the faint of heart. This is a grueling, time-consuming, nerve-wracking experience. I know that we’ll be happy once the thing is finished and we’re living in it, but HOLY HELL does this take a piece of your soul along the way. Stay tuned for the saga, as it continues….
