Sweet as: LUMA Light Show (redux)

It’s hard to believe that an entire year passed between visits to my favourite light show! I was late posting the photos from the 2017 show, and I’ve done an even worse job of getting around to the 2018 events … HOWEVER, the show was bigger, better, colder, and more fun the second time! We even had guests visiting Queenstown from Christchurch for the weekend, which made everything more fun.

Man, it was cold!

There’s something spectacular about thousands of strangers wandering through the botanic gardens at night, admiring the artistry and beauty of light sculptures. Despite the crowds, people tend to be considerate, friendly, and – for some reason – they whisper. (Maybe it’s the darkness?) Regardless, everyone seems to have a great time … aided in part by the food and drink options available. This year’s event expanded that tent, I’m guessing based on demand, and the music was better. Overall it was much more social!

I think every cold-weather city should do something like this. Surely the artists would appreciate the exposure (high school students included!), and the city gets a huge draw from the folks visiting town. Every restaurant booked, every bar full … It’s such a fun event. All hail LUMA!
