Sweet as: Luggage Upgrade!

One of the big things stressing me out right now is how I’m going to get all of my clothes to New Zealand. I thought I was ahead of the game by segregating my closet into three categories:

  1. Take now (hey, hey – it’s summer down under!)
  2. Round 2 (come back for these *loved* winter items)
  3. Store (I’m attached, but I don’t need a ball gown at the moment)

Turns out … not so far ahead. I clearly want to bring too many things with me RIGHT NOW, and I don’t see the airline allowing me as many bags as I would like to bring. The challenge, I think, is that the weather is both summer and fall at the moment – one day the high temperature is 74 degrees, and the next it’s only 57. Imagine what it’s like at night!  So I kinda need a little bit of every climate. And a little bit of every activity. And a little bit of, well, everything. Which is why I’m not gonna get it all there in one shot.

What’s a girl to do?

Buy new luggage (apparently).

I love my old Samsonite hard-sided case. It’s been around the world (a few times), and the picture doesn’t show all of its travel scars. But, as with all aged items (including me), the wheels are a little stiff and the handle isn’t as forthcoming. If I’m going to stuff that thing full of really important personal items, I need a suitcase that can keep up.

So I bought that beautiful Rimowa. It will become the big sister to one I already have, and I’m weirdly happy about having a little family of them. It’s sleek, HUGE, and distinctive in a sea of luggage sameness. I did look at the Raden, which I really really wanted to like, but the battery pack took up too much interior space and was meaningfully smaller in overall volume than the Rimowa. [Frankly, as an aside, I don’t know why the large one needs the phone charger. You check the luggage as soon as you get to the airport, and some people report that the suitcase was flagged by security for the battery. The carry-on? Yea, that I understand – having a phone charger is key. But I don’t get the need on the large one.] So, the Rimowa came home with me.

Now let’s see how much stuff I can jam into it!

  1. I know you leave already tomorrow, but I highly recommend the Samsonite Tote-a-Ton duffle bag which you can buy at the BB&B in Aventura on Biscayne.

It won’t be nearly as durable as your hard-sided ones, but for packing clothes it allows you to take much more. And it is very cheap. We bought 5 🙂

Shame I didn’t know about this before now! I’m going to keep this in mind when I come back for my winter clothes… The reviews on that thing are awesome!

How many outfits can you wear on the plane? 🙂

Not as many as I would want! 🙂 One of my suitcases busted during transit yesterday, so I needed to buy yet another one today… Let’s hope that this is the end of buying luggage!
